"The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman" was originally a musical radio play commissioned by Swedish Radio. The Mael Brothers adapted it and released it as an album in 2009. in 2011, they presented a quasi-scenic version for the Los Angeles Film Festival. Their goal had long been to realize the piece as a film.
Although Bergman's themes in his films traditionally revolve around questions of death, faith, the existence of God, and the search for love and meaning in life, in the musical Bergman is confronted with the lure of a mythological Hollywood seemingly at odds with everything he stands for - a Hollywood that seduces and ultimately seeks to control him. What begins as an exploration by Bergman of the potential mutual benefits of his work in Hollywood evolves into a Kafkaesque nightmare that is ended with the help of a most unlikely savior.
