It’s a tale almost as old as breakbeats on the ones and twos: legendary rap album gets shelved due to label politics and A/R concerns over lacking radio-friendly singles. Unlike so many records with similar stories, this particular album, however, is Danish - and now, 30 years later, it will finally be released.
Unorthodox: The 1995 Tapes by rapper Youngblood (yb) and legendary producer trio The Prunes (Beastie Boys, Mo’ Wax) is a rarity in Danish hiphop: dark, uncompromising boom-bap that fits right in with classics like The Sun Rises in the East and Enta da Stage. A raw, relentless sound that once scared off the rapper’s former record label, but now is sure to find its way to a lot of new listeners far beyond its country of origin.
While Unorthodox would remain in the archives for years, thankfully Youngblood’s story didn’t stop there. He won a Danish Grammy in 1993 for his debut — the precursor to Unorthodox — and has since carved out an international career as a producer and writer, from the Method Man single Ya’ Meen to over 75 K-pop releases with groups like EXO, Seventeen, and Red Velvet.
Unorthodox: The 1995 Tapes features 11 previously unreleased tracks and joins a series of recent discoveries from The Prunes’ archives. The album drops 3 October 2025 on limited vinyl via Rekords Records and digitally on Lizard Shakedown.
