Roughly two years ago, John Elway tried to muscle Fort Collins, Colorado punk band Elway into changing their name. The band received lots of media attention, with many mentions of the music being something dismissive like “…and the band isn’t half bad, either!” Let this be the last we will speak of the band’s run-ins with Hall of Fame football players because, at this point, their music can speak for itself.
Leavetaking, Elway’s follow-up to 2011’s Delusions, finds the band playing their unique brand of aggressive, sometimes indie, sometimes folk-inspired punk rock. The most noticeable change between albums, other than the improved songwriting, is Browne’s voice. He sings with the effortlessness of The Replacements’ Paul Westerberg and his vocal stylings serve as the anchor for Elway’s broad range of songs.
