Si Spex – 2 Sides Of Barry
- King Of The Beats
- UK - Original
Hip-hop’s oldest/least likely beat maker to mark the launch with a Willy Wonka golden ticket-style vinyl drop across UK charity shops.
Barry Beats, the twisted creation of beatmaker Si Spex, may look like a 50-something model railway enthusiast with a locked attic, but he’s also Cornwall’s answer to DJ Premier: legends like Nas, Mos Def and Dilated Peoples have all graced his beats with their bars.
Already available on Spotify, this February sees the long-awaited vinyl release of the debut Si Spex LP – 2 Sides of Barry – on UK imprint King of the Beats records
Side 1 shows off Barry's sophisticated approach to sampling, reflecting his decades in the game, while side 2 is 100% sample-free. Using nothing but software instruments, Barry makes the second side sound like it’s straight from the 70s jazz, funk and folk crates.
And so to the vinyl release. As well as stuffing the LP package with beloved old school attention to detail – a hand-signed Barry press shot and a glossy Smash Hits style colour poster (see below) – the sleeve comes adorned with one of a selection of retro price tags. So did yours originate in Woolworths? Or was it Record and Tape Exchange, a Scope charity shop or even Cornish retail mecca, Trago Mills?
And to top things off everyone who purchases the album will receive a code enabling exclusive access to a full length documentary. This 55 min film by Pritt Kalsi of King of the Beats chronicles the story of how this LP came into being.
