In February 2010, Deafheaven formed in San Francisco as a duo consisting of vocalist George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy. The two had previously played in the grindcore band Rise Of Caligula. With Deafheaven, however, they had an obviously more diverse musical style in mind, and the influences of black metal, shoegazing and post-rock are unmistakable. Their album "Sunbather", released in 2013, was highly praised internationally and made it into numerous annual best-of lists under the keyword "blackgaze". In the meantime, Deafheaven has grown to a quintet and has completed work on "New Bermuda", their third album by now. It is released by the label ANTI and quotes the death metal demigods Dissection and Morbid Angel and hints at blackened influences of Behemoth and Metallica from the Cliff Burton era. Clearly, Deafheaven leave their comfort zone with "New Bermuda" and with blunt force and wild rage in their luggage, they make kindling out of everything left and right of the way. "New Bermuda" offers five exceptionally long, brutally beautiful tracks with running times of about ten minutes and thus simply perfect metal.
