Let’s talk about History. The Alhambra Decree was an edict issued on 31 March 1492, by the joint Catholic Monarchs of Spain ordering the expulsion of practicing Jews from the Crowns of Castile and Aragon and its territories and possessions by 31 July of that year. This prompted several Sephardic Jews to turn to Piracy, take back what was theirs, and take revenge for the expulsión. This is when the Skull & Crossbones appeared and the term Pirata. During the early 2000’s the Hip Hop departments of the music industry (not the Hip Hop culture)made a push to expel samples from the Hip Hop sound. Samples seemed only for the rich as Kanye and Rocafella Records were flourishing on the culturally rich sampled sound of Hip Hop and everyone was asking indy producers for unsampled beats for the sake of turning a profit. 90’s rappers were asking for unsampled beats online and coming out with unremarkable tunes. Some of the mcees who still championed the sampled Hip Hop sound despite industry embargo’s were GFK, Raekwon, and Sean P. Fast forward to what passes for mainstream Hip Hop radio and we have electronic keyboard beats with insectlike rattling of high hats to remind us of the infestation with awful messages to lower the morale of any listener.
Legendary Atoms Fam Hip Hop mcee Cryptic One and Atoms producer JestoneArt come swashbuckling in with Pirata. Jest laces slick samples with fresh breaks, sharp drum programming, and Cryptic floods them with rhymes that lead one through a maze of thoughts, imagery, and social commentary. Pirata taking it the culture back and you need in on this historic moment!
