"Sometimes I Might Be Introvert" is Simz's first album since 2019's critically acclaimed and Mercury Prize-nominated "GREY Area," and her new work has an almost defiant opulence and expansiveness, a true modern classic that effortlessly blends disparate styles into a stunning whole to bridge the gap between restless modern narratives and hip-hop

The album shows the huge leap in development the artist has made since "GREY Area," and it's clearly not designed to conquer the pop charts. Rather, it conveys the feelings of anger and strength, distraught and fear that black women experience in our society today, and it's not simply philosophical musings

The result is some of the most ambitious and impressive tracks we've heard from Little Simz to date; an album that pushes the rap genre to the limit. There's no soft opening with "Sometimes I Might Be Introvert." Shrill and merciless, you're thrown in at the deep end with "Introvert," a lecture on living in the crosshairs of society, full of anxiety, exhaustion and frustration, but also political awakening. It's a quick-witted, uncompromising, death-defying response, haunting and compelling. It's accompanied by a fantastic video by Solomon Lightelm of PRETTYBIRD - part majestic, part scary, with a piecemeal, collage-like structure that perfectly reflects the setting: a beautiful and dangerous place of violence and dogged resistance. The middle, Simz repeatedly declares, will not last ("man it's like they can't sleep until our spirit is crushed") - and the artist doesn't miss a messy detail. The rest of the album's tracks flow smoothly into one another

"Sometimes I Might Be Introvert" was produced by Simz and her musical partner Inflo. Guests include up-and-coming artists such as Cleo Sol, Obongjayar and even actress Emma Corrin, known from the series "The Crown." The delicate, agile storytelling makes you feel the feverish, glistening world we live in with uncompromising energy and dynamism. Like garish Polaroid photos, the songs unfold before our eyes and the photographer is everywhere, documenting a new world where tender moments stand alongside terrifying violence, femininity is celebrated and very thoughtful moments await us

Among the many voices in the current music business, Simz is one of the most impressive. She writes with an intensity and urgency that few can match. Then again, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert isn't a collection of rants, either. Instead, it's a living hybrid, a radically honest work that uses personal stories, big and small, private and social, to put paradoxical situations under the magnifying glass and denounce them. Like other legendary musicians before her, Simz looks at the chaos and mess in the world with an alert and engaged eye, and she sees the awesome possibilities and enormous responsibilities it holds
