Jamo Gang is Ras Kass & El Gant on the mic and J57 on the beats.
New York underground mainstay El Gant and Los Angeles lyricist Ras Kass have sustained their solo careers by releasing formidable material with some of rap’s most revered lyricists, DJs, and producers. They have joined forces with Long Island’s Brown Bag All-Stars producer/occasional rapper J57, whose 90s retro-style production are a natural fit for both MCs’ talents and target audiences on their “Jamo Gang EP”.
The trio’s name is an homage to the Irish whiskey brand Jameson, with a mission en route to dismiss any detractors. Their self-titled project is a lean composite of eight tracks weaving El Gant’s and Razzy’s politically incorrect and sophisticated punchlines with 80s/90s rap classics and pop culture references. Ras Kass’s mission statement, “Like a clumsy Mexican waitress/Jamo Gang, no Gangnam style dances, no fake shit” are primed for rap traditionalists and black comedy enthusiasts. El Gant’s whispery vocals and occasional double-timed cadences compliment the Razzy’s non-linear, sneering vocal delivery. The frenetic turntablism on the tracks creates more appeal for purists itching for a raw, grittier sound.
Jamo Gang’s formation will likely expose themselves to a new generation of fans enamored with the indie rap scene and the punchy snares, thickened bass grooves and obscure, intelligent samples will surely attract tenured rap fans. That said, their metaphorical Jameson glasses are only three-quarters full thanks to all the aforementioned inconsistencies.
